ATHENS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
East Tower and Powerhouse Expansion
Athens, Georgia

The East Tower project includes the complete replacement of the hospital’s Emergency Department, expansion and upgrades to Obstetrics and Family Care Units, and a new Special Care Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  Additional covered parking will be provided for patients and visitors along with a landscaped plaza at the main entry level. The additions necessitated an expansion of the central powerhouse to accommodate both current and future energy needs.

The project was significantly over budget early in the construction phase.  Collins Project Management was engaged to implement an aggressive cost reduction plan which resulted in savings of more than $2 million.

An extremely tight construction site located adjacent to surgical services created significant challenges for the project team.  An enormous amount of logistical planning and careful analysis of potential risks resulted in a well designed and well executed project plan.
