South Addition And Patient Tower Expansion
Athens, Georgia
The South Tower project is a 175,000 addition to the main hospital which creates significant expansion space for Cardiology, Radiology, Endoscopy, and the hospital’s Laboratory. The addition of 58 new patient rooms via a two-level vertical expansion of the existing patient tower increases the total number of licensed beds to 359. The hospital is connected to a Medical Office Building via an elevated and conditioned bridge.
Construction commenced before a similar sized project was completed, requiring careful planning and execution in order to minimize disruptions to hospital operations and avoid inconveniencing patients and visitors.
Collins Project Management was engaged at the start of the project to provide total project management services including determination of the best delivery strategies, project team selection, management of the design and preconstruction process, preconstruction planning, oversight of construction activities, and move planning and coordination.

East Tower and Powerhouse Expansion
Athens, Georgia
The East Tower project includes the complete replacement of the hospital’s Emergency Department, expansion and upgrades to Obstetrics and Family Care Units, and a new Special Care Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a 165,000 sq. ft. addition. Additional covered parking for 300 cars is provided for patients and visitors along with a landscaped plaza at the main entry level. The additions necessitated an expansion of the central powerhouse to accommodate both current and future energy needs.
The project was significantly over budget early in the construction phase. Collins Project Management was engaged to implement an aggressive cost reduction plan which resulted in savings of more than $2 million.
An extremely tight construction site located adjacent to surgical services created significant challenges for the project team. An enormous amount of logistical planning and careful analysis of potential risks resulted in a well designed and well executed project plan.
